Turbo Trainer Triathlon Cycling Dubai….
“Love the Turbo” was the response when I asked my coach, Brett Sutton, how to knock 10 mins off my 70.3 bike split.
What do you do during the hot summer, or when the recent weather in Dubai rendered our beautiful cycling track mostly inoperable? The turbo is a practical option, that is if we want to continue to train for any upcoming races. Cycling will no doubt return to normal at some point soon but certain parts of the Al Qudra loop will need rebuilding and others may stay flooded for the foreseeable future. So onto the Turbo.
Why does TriSutto love the turbo so much?
1) It’s a time saver. There is no need to drive 20 or 30 mins to the Bottom of the Stick (BOTS) car park or DXBike and back just to get your ride in. With the turbo you just hop on and off thereby saving time in our busy life schedules.
2) It’s safe- no chance to get hit by an oncoming cyclist or run into any other hazard (speaking from experience).
3) A great way to build strength as on most smart trainers you can increase the resistance to incorporate big gear (low RPM 45-55) intervals. I have had 20 x 1 minute big gear intervals on my training program every Monday for the last three years and this has paid off.
4) You can laser in on a specific power number or range if that is the goal of the workout, keep at a steady heart rate or work at a particular cadence without the interruptions of roundabouts or crossings etc,
5) Failing getting up at 04:00 am it’s the most efficient and sensible way to train through the summer in the UAE for an upcoming race
6) We can focus 100% on the workout with no distractions or just hop on and do a recovery ride and watch a bit of TV
It is family friendly. That hour you saved by putting your bike in the car, driving to BOTS and back is time given back to the family.
